DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY COMPLIANCE FAQ
What are the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines?
The WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) were made to establish a single shared standard for the accessibility of web content that is applied to governments, organizations, and individuals around the world.
The four basic guidelines are:
- Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
- Operable: Users must be able to operate the interface components and navigation.
- Understandable: Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable.
- Robust: Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies, and must remain current as technologies evolve.
What are the ADA requirements?
The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was started in 1990. The ADA makes it illegal for any government or business entity to provide products or services that are not accessible to people with disabilities. If the technology already exists where the general public can order a product, apply to a job, et al at any time of the day or night, then this ability must be available to people regardless of their abilities.
Title III of the ADA focuses on web accessibility. It states that any business or organization that serves the public (also known as “public accommodations”) must be accessible regardless of digital format. The Department of Justice confirmed that Americans with Disabilities Act applies to public accommodation websites, also.
Why is web accessibility important?
The internet is an indispensable part of our collective lives. We use it for employment, entertainment, information, education, healthcare, and so much more. Since it has become increasingly essential to our day to day lives, it must be accessible to people of all abilities.
With the user experience being one of the most important parts of a website, it is key to make sure that the site is usable by people who may have deficiencies in audio, print, and visual accessibility. Being ADA compliant, also helps reach a wider audience and an improved profile of your company or organization socially.
